steam mop: water softening on the cheap?

I read all the reviews before i bought my home tek steam mop elite, but no one mentioned how expensive the water softening crystals were. If I were to use tap water my guarantee would be invalidated. So, my question is, without having to fork out for the water softening crystals, is there anything else i could do? Water softening machines are expensive as is bottled distilled water.

If you have a dehumidifier, the water that comes out of it could be used, as it is a “distilled” water. Other than that, collect rainwater?
