Water Softener Salt Types

Any feedback on septic tank / well water / sump pump in Oakland or Lapeer County, MI?

Hi, My fiance and I are looking to buy a home in either Brandon Twp or Clarkston, MI. All of the houses we are looking at have well water and a septic tank. We have never lived with either of these items before. My question is, does anyone live around these areas who can provide me feedback? Does the septic tank ever back up? How often does it have to be pumped? How is the well water? Do you have to have a Water Softener with salt? Is it worth it? My dad has advised me to stay away from homes with this type of system, but all of the houses we like seem to have this. Any help? Thanks!!!

if your septic system has a drain feild installed it shouldnt need pumping as long as the per-person it was designed for isnt exceeded. rid-x is a good product that helps with the system too. well water is like anywhere its hard a Water Softner will help but i didnt think it was worth the expense on running it with the added expense on the salt and water consumption. no city water taste as good as a cold glass of fresh well water. my suggestion is the water heater make sure you have a clean out on it if its electric. as far as a sump pump for a septic system it can be a head ache. unless the price is real reasonable stay away from them houses good luck :0)
