Water Softener Health Risks

What are these particles being produced by my Water Softener?

Last February I installed a water softener in my home and within a few days I found that the screen on the cold water line of my washing machine had become clogged with these tiny rusty brown looking particles…like tiny little beads. Since then, they’re not being produced as rapidly, but I still need to clean the screen on the cold water line of the washing machine every few weeks, not to mention on the faucets, showerheads, etc.

What’s the scoop?

What can I do to correct it? Assuming of course that it’s not just a natural byproduct that should eventually stop happening.

Is there a health risk here?
Interesting…I’ll have to test for iron content…thank you.

I will say though that we’re on city water, not well water, and generally there isn’t an iron problem with our local water supply that I’m aware of.

At least this gives me a good place to start. Now I just need to find a test kit.

If you’re on a well it seems to me you have iron in the water and maybe even a iron bacteria. You can try using Iron Out salt to see if this resolves the problem.
